The Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (ADLM) offers a small start-up research grant to support early-career investigators who need limited funding to explore innovative, exploratory ideas particularly in areas where traditional research funding may be limited or unavailable.

Eligibility

Applicants should meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Early-career status is preferred, including individuals in the early stages of their research and/or clinical careers (e.g., graduate students, post-docs, residents, fellows, and assistant professors).
  • The grant is intended to support individuals currently in fellowship or training programs, or new faculty within five years of completing training.
  • Open to ADLM members and non-members, with preference given to young/early-career investigators.

How to apply

Complete the Application for Research Grant. Applications are due by January 31, 2027, for projects starting after April 1, 2027. 

Applications will be evaluated using the following scientific criteria:

  • Originality,
  • Scope,
  • Scientific significance,
  • Soundness of research plan,
  • Degree of achievability,
  • Potential for the project to lead to further exploration beyond grant period, and
  • Transferability of research findings to actual practice.

Administrative criteria used will include:

  • Degree to which the research proposal is critical to the career of the applicant,
  • Degree to which the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (ADLM) funding is critical to the start of the project,
  • Adequacy of the facility proposed, and
  • Satisfactory budget.

Preference for research grants will be given to young investigators.

2025 – The 2025 General Research Grant was awarded to Lejla Alić, MD, PhD, University of Sarajevo – Faculty of Medicine, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, for her project entitled “The role of joint action of anti-malondialdehyde antibodies and complement factor H polymorphisms in kidney graft function and rejection."

2024 – The 2024 General Research Grant was awarded to Cristina Andrea Figueroa Villalba, MD, Clinical Pathology Resident, Yale School of Medicine, for her project entitled "Measuring CD147 Marker for Transfusion Success of Red Cell Units Over Storage: A Comparison Between Whole Blood Derived and Apheresis Derived Units.”

2023 – General Research Grant not awarded.

2022 – The 2022 General Research Grant was awarded to Edward S. Lee, MD, PhD, Resident, Yale School of Medicine, for his project entitled "Characterizing the Role of Marginal Zone B Cells in Memory Responses to Red Blood Cell Transfusions Using Single Cell Sequencing.”

2021 General Research Grant not awarded.

2020 – The 2020 General Research Grant was awarded to Gaurav K. Gupta, MD, PhD, Clinical Fellow, Yale New Haven Hospital, for his project entitled "Assessment of Factor V Activity in Apheresis Platelet Units.”

2019 – General Research Grant not awarded.

2018 – The 2018 General Research Grant was awarded to Khushbu Patel, PhD, Assistant Professor, Pathology, UT Southwestern Medical Center, for her project entitled "Validation of microRNA 323-3p as a Predictor of Ectopic Pregnancy."
